Discovered an "exceptional" art rock station in Jumilla (30/12/2009)

The International Federation of Rock Art has included the Regional Centre of Rock Art in the list of the most important global

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, today presented the latest findings of rock paintings in prehistoric art station 'Riquelme Coat' from Jumilla.

In this event the Minister was accompanied by the Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, the director of the Regional Centre of Rock Art, Miguel San Nicolas, and the mayor of Mula, Diego Cervantes.

The finding has been the result of work by a team of archaeologists who reviewed the archaeological map of Murcia as indicated by the Department of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets.

In this sense, Cruz said that some paintings are "exceptional" and said the Center for the Study of Prehistory and Rock Art established the necessary protocols for study

'Wrap Riquelme'

'Riquelme Coat' is a small cavity with a nearby surface of 10 square meters in which there are a total of 40 painted motifs that could be ascribed, in principle, to the Neolithic, with a probable antiquity estimated between 7,000 and 5,000 years.

The counselor explained, "is one of the most unique coats, interesting and suggestive in the Mediterranean for their preservation and, above all, because the figures are bichromes, rather than monochrome as usual."

The Center for the Study of Prehistory and Rock Art, as well as technical advice and supervision, provide tracings of paintings to its discoverers to provide proper documentation, study and dissemination in professional journals.

On the other hand, have also begun work on closing the shelter, which since its discovery is considered a Cultural (BIC).

Publication

'The whole prehistoric rock art and Milan.

Mula, Murcia 'is the first publication of the Center for the Study of Prehistory and Rock Art, which collects scientific results obtained in this excavation by an interdisciplinary team comprising 15 professionals.

This paper, according to Cruz, "is an example of how the Network of Centres of Studies, overlapping with the Network of Museums of the Region of Murcia, begins to bear fruit in the form of work absolutely brilliant and undoubtedly will become international benchmark. "

The counselor said that the 'Milano' is "very important" because it is a coat of ample dimensions, within which live two styles, the diagram and the Levant.

In addition, associated with him is a megalithic tomb type (namely the 5,950 BC), in this way is a "unique" in the Levante peninsular.

For 2010 we are preparing a second paper which will focus on the coats of 'The Pit' of Calasparra and is working on another about the "Cave Serreta 'of Cieza.

In addition, it collaborates with several universities and Spanish research centers and with UNESCO to organize an international course on documentation of rock art, to be held in the region in late 2010.

Cruz said that the Region through the Regional Centre of Rock Art 'Casa Cristo' in Moratalla, has been admitted to the International Federation of Rock Art Organisations (IFRAO).

Thus, recognizing the history and conservation work, research and dissemination of rock art in the region of Murcia because, according to the counselor, "it is the largest research network in this area."
