Of a total of 30, nineteen of the XV Awards Competition Quality Wines from Jumilla were for wines and wineries of Jumilla.
The award winning wines were awarded during a ceremony in which he became the mayor of Jumilla Francisco Abellán as Honorary Chairman of the DO Jumilla.
Abellán received the baton from the hands of José Serrano Gang, manager of the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs.
Both received a gold pendant, shaped like a bunch of grapes, a replica of those found at the site of Coimbra del Barranco Ancho and winemaking tradition that represents more than 5,000 years.
In his speech, the newly appointed Honorary President advocated the universality of wine and made many proposals for the sector.
Abellán thus noted that "the Jumilla wine stands on its own, with an enormous national prestige, European and global levels, but it is true then the market is influenced by a number of factors that are not dependent on the quality but how to make this quality, we need that capability in order to identify wines with vivid icons as an example that can defend Roque Baños, celebrate and recognize the benefits of wine from Jumilla, as it is doing. "
The mayor added that "we can also work with proposals involving the universality of this sector, we can study the possibility of allocating a few cents of the cost of each bottle of wine from Jumilla in places where there are fewer opportunities and more inequalities are produced, so that consuming these cents are known to alleviate the basic needs of those who have nothing. "
Francisco Abellán acknowledged that "it was a pleasure to work in these eight years that Michael has been president, and now I take this assignment on greater responsibility and greater commitment, which will be in everything you ask me and ask me for the good wine and people, as they are two things that can not be separated, we know that more than 5,000 years of winemaking tradition. "
For his part, Miguel Gil Vera said the contest "which is manifested in Jumilla industry consolidation, we aim to ensure that there is an added value throughout the production chain."
The president added that the crisis being experienced worldwide can benefit Jumilla wines, "on the last trip we made to the United States we have seen how the average wine consumption expenditure which stood at $ 30 the consumer has not stopped drinking wine, but that average has dropped to between 10 and 20 dollars, which means that we are the target of many potential consumers. "
Vera Gil added that "even have told us that wine is now being consumed by them is less money for the same quality as more expensive."
Finally, Miguel Gil Vera said of the wines that "this year I was surprised and happy because Monastrell 2008 campaign had the highest score I remember in the last eight, and likewise those of 2006 and add had earlier scored very high, "he said, adding that" all hold a very important quality, so if we can maintain this pace, Jumilla wines have much future.
