Agriculture is developing a draft zoning vines in the area of Jumilla (07/11/2008)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, through the Instituto Murciano Research and Agricultural Development and Food (IMID), develops a draft zoning vines in the area of Jumilla.

According to the director of IMIDA, Adrian Martinez, the study aims to "better understanding of the potential of wine production areas, in anticipation of a restructuring of the sector.

The responsible regional EU notes that the ability to boot pack up to 175,000 hectares of vineyards and wine market liberalization from 2016, to resolve and the existence of high surpluses.

This raises the sector, according to Martinez, "the urgent need to focus on quality."

In this regard, adding that if eventually you have to remove part of existing vineyards in cultivation, "a better understanding of the potential production areas, will start those wineries that are producing lower quality wines that give and maintain balanced production and quality. "

The above project is developed in collaboration with the Control Board and its main purpose is, says Martinez, "identify potential sub-areas with different wine by Climate data analysis in Jumilla, define and delimit their ability wine geographically on maps linked to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and used to study the behavior of the Monastrell variety in different parts of the DO

For this, the Ministry has in the Jumilla area weather stations of Agricultural and Food Information System of Murcia (SIAM) analytical data and soil with a density sufficient to 1:100000 scale map of the proposed Fight Desertification in the Mediterranean (Lucedme).

Methodology

According to José Ignacio Fernández, a research team of IMIDA Viticulture and Enology, the traditional methodology related to the zoning "is generally based on the relationship between environment and quality of their products.

The issue is complex, he adds, and requires "interdisciplinary participation of experts in viticulture, oenology, soil science, climatology, geology, cartography, statistics and computer science."

The end result is a map whose mapping units synthesize the relationships between soil factors, climate and terrain morphology.

The processing of information generated, Fernandez concludes, "can now address important issues raised in viticulture, such as zoning wine depending on the parameters that define the environment and are involved in wine quality."

He adds, "allows the differentiation of areas depending on the qualities produced, the organization of grape cultivation and selection of experimental plots located in each of the areas that were previously discriminated against based on research."
