The Governing Council has approved an agreement between the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment and the City of Jumilla to carry out actions to improve forest stands in defense against forest fires in the public interest Acebuchar Sierra, Solana del Sopalmo, The Stove, Sierra Larga and Sierra de Santa Ana.
Under this agreement, the Ministry will provide 154,000 euros to the City Council for the completion of the works, which have a deadline of three months.
For its part, the City Council will appoint a technician to direct these tasks.
In addition, a monitoring committee comprising representatives of both administrations in fulfillment of this agreement, which will run until April 31, 2016 will be created.
In the municipality of Jumilla A total of 33 woodland included in the Catalogue of Public Utility, covering an area of ​​32,950 hectares currently exist.
The reforestation carried out between 1950 and 1970 were especially Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis), due to their frugality and adaptability.
Many of these now need reforestation silvicultural treatments, such as pruning, thinning and other oriented forest fire prevention work.
With these treatments it contributes to the conservation and enhancement of forest ecosystems and their biological potential, productive capacity and biodiversity is maintained, while improving and increasing the resistance of the mountains to the spread of fire and favors restoration of degraded mass.
Therefore, we proceeded to carry out the selection of several areas reforested mountains located in Jumilla public utility where it is necessary to undertake this kind of preventive forestry actions in order to improve the environmental quality of the mount.
