As explained Enrique Jimenez, "Sweden was the first country in the world is to institute a day of the year as Arbor Day."

This occurred in 1840, when the country had become aware of the importance of forest resources, the care that is needed to provide the trees, and the need to introduce children at an early age, in the knowledge and practice a long-term task.

Forests provide us with essential goods and services and help ensure the food, water and clean air.

They also protect the soil and are essential for achieving sustainable development.

Despite how important they are for us, not always protect them as we should.

Half of the forests that once covered the Earth, 29 million square kilometers, have disappeared, about 78 percent of the forests have been destroyed and the remaining 22 percent are threatened by logging, conversion to other uses such as agriculture and livestock, mining, big dams, roads and forest tracks, population growth and climate change.

A total of 76 countries have already lost all its forests and eleven others may lose them in the coming years.

In Spain there is no primary forest, only a few areas in the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains.

The objective of celebrating this day is to generate love for trees among children of the town, through their knowledge, encourage them to become active agents of care and respect for the trees, promote the role of the educational community in changing attitudes towards environmental issues and promote cooperation, which will ensure that all people enjoy a more prosperous future.
