The Director General of Agro-Food Industry and Agricultural Training, Ángel García Lidón, noted that "the cultivation of cherry Jumilla is already an economic alternative to other fruit."
Garcia Lidón made remarks on the occasion of the celebration of the Tenth Technical Seminar on R & D project of introduction of the cherry in the Region of Murcia, held last Thursday at the experimental farm 'La Maestra' of that municipality.
The responsible regional stated that "it's the cherry jumillana defendant in the domestic market and travel to other distant markets as high-quality export product."
In this regard, he added that the features limestone soils of Jumilla and sunny climate, "a cherry result in high sugar content and firmness of fruit highly appreciated by consumers."
In Jumilla, the collection period of this fruit is from mid May until the first decade of July.
Those attending the Technical Conference on the ground found the collection of 70 varieties that the Ministry of Agriculture and Water has implemented on the farm 'Master', whose trees are now in his fifth green.
Also observed the behavior of Newstar variety of different patterns that allowed the cultivation of cherry in particular soil in the area, compared with pattern selections introduced from other research centers and abroad.
The meeting also included a visit to the commercial planting of the farm Toli, where average yields have been reached over 25,000 kilos per hectare in 2011.
This year is also expected a bumper crop and high quality market.
The Murcian Institute of Agricultural Research and Development and Food (IMIDA) is leading the R & D project on introduction of the cherry in the Region of Murcia.
Jan Under this initiative, has established three collections of varieties located in areas with different climatic conditions, which are located in La Alberca (Murcia), El Chaparral (Bullas) and Jumilla and plantations of reference, monitoring plots and observation spread over the various regions of Murcia.
Results
The annual results of the project is presented through technical seminars organized in different districts of the region in which it may be of interest to this crop.
They reflect the views of participants and to assess the interest shown on the variety, after learning their behavior and production quality.
The annual reports compiled in which these results are disseminated primarily through the Internet ((www.imida.es) and are available to farmers, cooperatives and other agricultural organizations and business.
