The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, yesterday attended the award ceremony of the XVIII Quality Competition Jumilla wines, accompanied by Chairman of the Board of the Designation of Origin Jumilla, Pedro Lencina, and the head of organizing committee, Enrique Calduch.
After the award ceremony took place at the gala dinner which was named the new President of Honor of Jumilla, the national soccer team coach, Vicente del Bosque.
The jury of the Contest XVIII Quality Wines of Jumilla was comprised of 16 professional tasters, most of them critical of the major national media and winemakers, sommeliers and experts from the national administrations, Murcian and Castilian-La Mancha.
The jury assessed more than a hundred samples, tastings open to the public, held three public sessions on 22 and 23 in the Plenary Hall of the City Council Jumillano.
27,000 hectares cultivated
The Jumilla is one of the oldest wine regions of Spain, which also includes part of the territory of Albacete.
The Control Board currently has 2,780 growers, 44 wineries and a total of 27,000 hectares, annually producing 22 million liters of wine qualified, of which half is exported.
The main consumer markets of wine producing area of ​​this are Germany and the United Kingdom within the European Union countries and the United States and Japan in third countries.
