On Friday, the Community of Irrigators Miraflores presented the results of "Study the feasibility of using wastewater from the plant in Jumilla in Miraflores Irrigation Community ', by researchers at the CEBAS-CSIC and University Cartagena. "
The event was attended by about 250 people, including representatives of Miraflores, responsible for the study, as well as various authorities, including the president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) Charo Quesada, the Mayor of Jumilla Francisco Abellán, counselor of Agriculture Antonio Cerda and several councilors of the corporation.
A careful study by the CEBAS-CSIC and the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, reveals that the water obtained by the treatment plant in Jumilla, are suitable for use as irrigation for crops.
One of the conclusions of this study "reclaimed water are an important input of nutrients for fruit crops. The direct application would represent savings of at least 50% of the nutritional needs of phosphorus and potassium for crops currently on the CR Miraflores. "
The owner of Agriculture and Water noted that the purified water "have the right conditions" for direct use in irrigation, and stressed that these treatment plants apply tertiary treatment system "with which we managed to remove 97 percent of the pollutant load. "
This treatment process, Cerda said, "is similar to that used to supply water purification."
He also recalled that the sewage of Jumilla, with a treatment capacity of up to four cubic hectometres, "provides almost a third of the volume of water needed for irrigation of Miraflores," adding that "it is safe water and zero cost farmers, as they are reused. "
For its part, Charo Quesada, president of CHS, said that "the aim of reusing must be fundamental, since the Segura basin is deficient."
For this reason, it showed its full availability to work when having to make the investments needed to bring water from the reservoirs own treatment to the irrigators, and announced that the Directorate General of Water in Spain, is already working on seeking funding for this project can be a reality as soon as possible.
