Because in this campaign cycle of the vineyard is more delayed than in the previous season, the beginning of the harvest in DO Jumilla is delayed between 7 and 10 days compared to 2009, according to reports from the Regulatory Board.
The first shipments of grapes, especially for white varieties, began to gather along the second half of August, generalizing from the past September 13.
Also last week began to harvest grapes games early and red varieties in warmer areas, such as the "Glen of the Jew" in Jumilla.
The area of vineyards in Jumilla registered for this campaign is about 27,000 ha., Of which 1,150 are for white varieties and the remaining 25,850 to red varieties, among which the local variety 'Monastrell' representing over 80% of all registered vineyards in the DO Jumilla, this vineyard is divided among more than 2,500 growers registered with the Regulatory Council of the DO Jumilla.
Last year we collected 84 million kilos, however, for this season, due to climatic hazards such as hail, affecting different areas and cities of the DO, is expected to collect approximately 65 million, representing a decline than 20% over 2009.
This grape is harvested mostly by hand and produced in more than 35 wineries registered in the Control Board and approved for such development.
The Regulatory Council of the DO Jumilla ensure quality control, for which approved rules for this season, both for growers to wineries, sent to various agricultural organizations, cooperatives and wineries, in order to obtain more quality of grapes and wines.
The health of the grapes is good, hoping that starting next week the widespread harvest in different areas, following verification by the cooperatives and wineries in the state of ripeness of the grapes, which will result in better quality wines.
