Restoration works for the Fuente de Sopalmo and its environment are presented (28/03/2017)

This morning we have presented the restoration works of the Fountain of Sopalmo and the ethnographic and wildlife improvements made in its surroundings.

The visit was attended by the Mayor of Jumilla, Juana Guardiola, the Councilor for Forestry and Environment, Juan Gil, the peddler of Las Encebras, Francisco Molina, as well as Manuel Cava, representing the construction contractor company Entorno Rural, SL), neighbors of the hamlet and components of the Association of Rural Women of Las Encebras.

The rehabilitation has been carried out in two phases with a cost of 35,424 euros.

At the mine located in the middle of the slope have been carried out actions of cleaning of roots, improvement of drainage and a door has been installed.

At the foot of the slope have been executed works for the recovery of the ponds, the traditional stone laundry and water point for animals.

The traditional raft beneath the pools has been cleared of sediments.

The existing pipelines between the mine and the raft have also been improved, installing a stretch of Arabian tile between the pools and the traditional raft.

In short, an integral recovery of the spring, increasing the flow from 2 to 180 liters / hour.

The work lasted for two months, with several excavations being carried out manually.

The mayoress, Juana Guardiola, has stressed the importance of preserving the heritage we received from our ancestors.

"This money is very well used with the aim that our children and grandchildren know about this wealth that we have in Jumilla and know how our grandparents lived and how much they had to walk to get water."

Juana Guardiola has stated that in the future it intends to continue recovering other springs of the municipality and has also taken advantage of to request help from other administrations.

The peddler of Las Encebras, Francisco Molina, recalled the origins of the mine, which date back more than two centuries.

"My great-grandfather was one of the builders and until the 1970s he served to cover the basic water needs of the hamlet and the surrounding area. From here people and animals drank and washed their clothes."
