The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has developed the operation 'ROCINANTE' to investigate the origin of strong odors emanating from a farm, located in the municipality of Jumilla, which has made it possible to uncover a case of animal abandonment, resulting in Death of two horses, by starvation.

The investigation began when, thanks to the citizen collaboration, the Civil Guard was aware of the existence of a house from which emanated strong odors, reason why its location was arranged.
Recently, members of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Benemérita have located the estate, consisting of a house and an animal stable, where they have located the corpse of a horse, dead for about a month, as well as another Equine in critical condition.
The Civil Guard, in collaboration with veterinarians from the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, has verified that the animals showed signs of severe malnutrition, presumed to be the cause of the death of one of them, while the second, after assessing their state of health , Has had to be sacrificed to avoid a slow and painful death.

With this operation, the SEPRONA persists in the monitoring of the legislation that protects the rights of animals that are currently protected in our Penal Code.
The investigated person and the investigations have been made available to the Court of Instruction number 1 of Jumilla (Murcia).
Animal abandonment offense
Included in the Penal Code and included in crimes related to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals is the crime of animal abandonment.
This crime commits the one who abandons an animal in conditions that may endanger his life or integrity and is punished with a penalty of one to six months and special disqualification from three months to one year for the exercise of profession, trade or commerce that Is related to animals and to the possession of animals.

The second objective of this campaign is to make people aware that having an animal is a great responsibility and that animal abandonment is punishable by the current Penal Code.
