The objective of this initiative is to make people affected by this disease visible, raise funds to improve the quality of life of patients and families and, above all, keep alive the lines of research in search of the cure for ALS. Two days later, on Tuesday, June 23, the International Day of Dravet Syndrome is commemorated and, likewise, the facade of the Town Hall and the fountain of the Plaza del Camionero Juan Soriano will be illuminated, in this case in purple and with the similar objective to make the disease more visible and to continue investigating possible solutions. What are ALS and Dravet syndrome? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a degenerative neuromuscular disease in which the cells that control the movement of the voluntary musculature gradually decrease their function and die, causing a progressive paralysis of the affected person in a short period of time, preventing them from smiling, speaking , eat, move or breathe on their own.
The average life expectancy of patients does not usually exceed five years. Dravet syndrome, also known as severe childhood cyclonic epilepsy or polymorphic epilepsy, is a devastating childhood encephalopathy.
Children with Dravet syndrome often have poor language and motor development, hyperactivity, and difficulty interacting with other children.
