In full manifestation of the international day of working women, a select group of international tasters attended the explanations of Heidi Mäkinen, one of the women belonging to the exclusive club of the Master of Wine, and from Finland, who participated as a jury in the prestigious Bacchus awards.
The tasters convened by the Spanish Union of Tasters attended the explanations of their colleague who is also Wine Ambassador Vinitie, and Advanced Sommelier by the Court of Masters Sommelier.
Mäkinen talked about the characteristics he considers differentiators of Jumilla;
from its Monastrell variety, the altitude of the area and how it develops good acidity in the wines, to its soils, climatology, and the tradition of glass cultivation, prepared for the most extreme dry land.
Meanwhile, the award-winning wines were tasted at the 25th Dum Jumilla Wine Quality Contest.
It was started by Ontalba Sauvignon Blanc Ecologico, the silver medal-winning wine in its category that is made by Bodegas Ontalba, its export manager, Eustaquio Guardiola, was the representative of the winery at the tasting and who answered Heidi's questions in as for history, importance and even label design.
The next wine was the rosé from Bodegas Viña Elena, Pacheco Rosado Family.
Then, the young wine Luzon Monastrell Collection, from Bodegas Luzón, and winner of the gold medal in the category of elaborations without contact with wood.
Ramón Rodríguez, export manager of the winery provided information on the history and production of Luzon.
The next wine tasted was Mayoral Reservado, from the 2018 vintage, and produced by wineries 1890 - Grupo García Carrión was defended by Orestes García, the group's Wine Ambassador, who answered Heidi's questions about the development of the design of this wine and the Winery's way of working.
The tasting continued with Torrecastillo Barrica 2107 wines from Bodegas Torrecastillo, Divus 2015 from Bodegas Bleda, Alceño 12 from Bodegas Alceño, Maleros 12 months from Bodegas San Dionisio, and Castillo del Picacho 2015 from Bodegas BSI, awarded in their respective categories.
In the Crianza wine category, David Ferraje, representing Bodegas Carchelo, explained the singularities of his Altico 2015 wine, 100% Syrah, a foreign variety that, due to its Mediterranean character, has adapted very well in the Jumilla PDO.
Finally, the winemaker from Bodegas Alceño Juan Miguel Benítez, answered more technical questions from the Master of Wine on elaborations, practices and style, in the defense of his two award-winning wines Alceño 12 and Alceño Dulce.
To finish this Jumilla Podium, the gold and silver medal winning wines in the Sweet Wines and Liquor category were tasted.
Silvano García Dulce Monastrell 2016 and Alceño Dulce 2014 put the finishing touch on this memorable tasting of unique and unique elaborations that differentiate this PDO.
