The mayor of Jumilla, Juana Guardiola, and the Councilors for Works and Traffic, Francisco González and José Antonio Jiménez, presented this morning the works of adaptation and improvement of the Plaza del Camionero Juan Soriano, accompanied by several local Government councilors, technicians of Aguas de Jumilla and municipal, as well as president and members of Cotraju, truck drivers and relatives of Juan Soriano, whose name bears the square.
The engineer, Antonio Pablo Nicolás, has been in charge of explaining the technical part of the actions carried out.
The old square has been transformed into an oval roundabout without traffic lights with the aim of decongesting traffic in this area and gain in safety by coming together in the same four avenues and a street.
It has two two-way roads of 4 meters each with their corresponding adapted sidewalks, new signage, as well as new LED street lamps and continuation of the Liberty lane bike path.
The project, designed by architect Bernardo Simón, has included the construction inside the central gazebo of a circular ornamental fountain with water effects and submersible LED spotlights of different colors.
In addition, a concrete base has been installed where the Monument to the Trucker has been relocated, three masts with the national, regional and local flags, as well as a mural on the ground with decorative stone that simulates the municipal term of Jumilla.
At the other end, a recreation of the 'fifth wheel' of trucks, a safety mechanism that is used to keep the trailer attached to the truck, has been installed.
It has also installed a ceramic mural similar to that found at the confluence between Catholic Monarchs and Freedom.
In order to avoid possible flooding, several mailbox-type scuppers have been built at different points that will guarantee the entry of the runoff, being camouflaged under the sidewalk.
In addition, the rainwater collection system has been renewed.
The works have been carried out by the company Construcciones Ruiz Alemán, through Riegos Ago, for 298,900 euros after a bidding process in which 12 companies were presented.
Both the mayor and the councilors have shown their satisfaction with the result of the works.
"We have gained traffic flow in this busy area, as it has been shown in the weeks that the square has been open. At the same time, it has gained in safety and a usual area of water accumulation has improved when it rains ", said Juana Guardiola.
