The start of the harvest of pear Ercolini provides that more than one million kilos of this variety is certified with the seal of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) 'Pera de Jumilla', which makes this municipality the largest producer of This variety of both Spain and Europe thanks to its climatology.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries acting, Miguel Angel del Amor, visited today a farm of cultivation of this fruit of the Cooperativa Hortofrutícola Campos de Jumilla and stressed that Jumilla has a pear area of ​​just over one thousand hectares in production and an annual average of between 25 and 30 million kilos of harvest.
Del Amor indicated that around 250 hectares correspond to the Ercolini variety, of which between six and seven million kilos are produced, and around 50 hectares are already organically grown, with a production of 1,100 tons.
He also noted that at the regional level "there is a pear area of ​​1,200 hectares and more than 90 percent of Murcia pear leaves Jumilla."
This fruit differs from those produced in other areas by its unique organoleptic characteristics, with a white pulp sweet and sugary taste.
They are yellow on a green background, pearly rounded and with a diameter between 52 and 58 millimeters.
The vast majority of this pear "is marketed in the Spanish market, with the exception of Italy, Saudi Arabia and the Arab Emirates, where part is exported as a gourmet product," said the counselor.
Uncertified crops also have a place in international markets such as South America, northern Europe and Morocco.
The Region of Murcia has other Designation of Origin products, such as wines from the same municipality, Bullas and Yecla, Calasparra rice, as well as Murcian cheeses and paprika.
