Jumilla is an example in the Region of Murcia in the application of the law of 'zero sacrifice' that establishes the prohibition of the sacrifice of companion animals and only allows euthanasia for humanitarian reasons, public health, animal health or safety.
In the municipality it is being fulfilled and, in addition, for a decade, long before it was approved last 2017.
This week a meeting was held in the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia in which the difficulties of applying this Law 6/2017 in the municipalities of the Region were put on the table.
The councilor of the Animal Shelter, Pilar Martínez, and the Councilor for Public Health, Lucía Jiménez, accompanied by the Environmental Technician, Cristina Molina, attended the meeting.
The great majority of the town councils attended the difficulties mainly economic and material for the implementation of the zero-sacrifice regime and the problems of feral cat colonies, on which in Jumilla is intended to start the CES method (capture, sterilize , release).
Pilar Martínez pointed out that "there was unanimity in pointing out that regional funding is necessary to be able to face the ambitious 'zero sacrifice' challenge, however, we are one of the very few municipalities that is applying it and, also, for ten years now , which is when the Municipal Animal Shelter was set in motion, we are fulfilling it one hundred percent thanks to the joint work with the 4 Patas Jumilla Association ".
The City of Jumilla has contributed this year 38,000 euros of subsidy to this association and covers the maintenance costs of the Animal Shelter, in addition to 3,000 euros in a contract for the collection of animals.
The protector 4 Patas carries out various awareness campaigns together with the City Council throughout the year, attention to the public and management of adoptions.
Through different donations, charitable activities and the contributions of the partners, 4 Patas Jumilla manages about 40,000 euros per year that goes to veterinary expenses.
