The municipality of Jumilla joins the 'Active Families' program, aimed at children between six and eleven years old with sedentary habits and / or who show signs of overweight or obesity that may lead to chronic diseases in the future.
Thus, health professionals prescribe physical exercise, which they perform together with their parents in sports centers.
Childhood obesity, whose most significant long-term consequence may be its persistence in adulthood, is considered an important risk factor for developing other diseases responsible for high morbidity and mortality in adulthood.
The prevalence of childhood obesity has grown alarmingly in recent decades.
In the Region of Murcia, over 25 percent of those under 18 are overweight and, in the range of 5 to 14 years, the percentage is almost 29 percent.
Given these figures, the director general of Public Health and Addictions, José Carlos Vicente, stressed that "we must continue working to combat sedentary lifestyle, and our challenge for the next school year is to continue increasing the detection of children likely to be included in the Activa Families program. "
Currently, 11 municipalities and 15 health centers participate.
The attached town halls are Alcantarilla, Cehegín, Ceutí, Cieza, Las Torres de Cotillas, Molina de Segura, San Javier, Los Alcázares, and Yecla.
The last two locations to join this school year are Jumilla and Lorquí.
The number of pediatricians and pediatric nurses who prescribe physical exercise to children in their health centers is 59. Over the past two years, about 250 children have passed through the program.
On the other hand, the ministries of Health and Education, Youth and Sports, through the General Directorate of Planning, Research, Pharmacy and Citizen Services;
the General Directorate of Public Health, as well as the General Directorate of Attention to Diversity and Educational Quality will launch a project to disseminate the program in schools in five municipalities where it is already implemented, which are Ceutí, Jumilla, Lorquí, Los Alcazares and San Javier.
Physical activity
The evolution of some of the main chronic health problems and cardiovascular risk factors has shown an upward trend.
'Activa' is a community program designed to promote physical activity through the prescription of physical therapeutic exercise by primary care health professionals of the SMS with the collaboration of the town halls, which give up their sports facilities.
The program incorporates the prescription of physical exercise in Primary Health Care as an instrument of prevention / therapy for chronic diseases: cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, prediabetes, obesity, childhood obesity or depressive syndrome.
The objective is to prevent chronic problems and sedentary behavior, in addition to promoting healthy and healthy lifestyles, strengthening the consolidation of a culture in which the points of reference are the balanced diet and the practice of physical exercise.
Since its inception, some 7,000 patients have already passed through the program and 26 municipalities and 55 health centers from all health areas participate.
During the 2017-2018 academic year, 28 groups were formed with around 900 participants.
