Jumilla is positioned as the largest producer of this fruit in Spain and Europe thanks to its climatology
The harvesting campaign of the Jumilla pear this year will collect around four million kilos in the Altiplano of the Region.
Of these, it is expected to certify and label with the label of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) about one million kilos of pears 'Ercolini', the same amount as last year.
The PDO of Jumilla pear was created in 2005 and currently the municipality has three registered warehouses and about 100 farmers who cultivate an area of about 250 hectares of pear trees 'Ercolini'.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Angel del Amor, visited one of the companies of the municipality, the Cooperativa Hortofrutícola Campos de Jumilla.
This pear differs from those produced in other areas for its unique organoleptic characteristics, it has a white pulp with an excellent sweet and sugary flavor and slightly perfumed.
They are yellow on a green background, with a rounded pearly shape and with a diameter between 52 and 58 millimeters.
One of the singularities of this variety is the early harvest with respect to other similar fruits, since it begins at the end of June in some farms.
The collection campaign ended, in the later areas, in mid-August and now have begun the tasks of packaging and preparation for sale.
The counselor Miguel Angel del Amor stressed that "Jumilla is positioned as the largest producer of this fruit in Spain and Europe thanks to its climatology", adding that "the great majority of this variety is sold in the Spanish market, except for Italy, where 30,000 kilos were exported in 2017 ".
Uncertified crops also have a place in international markets such as South America, northern Europe and, mainly, countries in the Middle East.
This fruit is one of the products with Denomination of Origin of the Region as the wines of Jumilla, Bullas and Yecla;
the rice of Calasparra, as well as the cheeses and the paprika of Murcia.
