The Department of Environment reminds citizens that during the months of June, July and August is prohibited the use of sewage sludge or any animal manure as agricultural fertilizer, as it negatively affects the quality of life, causing, in some cases, unpleasant odors and the proliferation of flies and mosquitoes, especially when the agrarian practice is not done correctly.
This action is being carried out in recent years in different plots of the municipality of Jumilla because the treatment plants produce thousands of tons of sludge with a high fertilizing power, which can be used as an amendment for soils given their richness in organic matter and nutrients.
As every summer, from Environment of the City of Jumilla is remembered that it is collected as a very serious infractions this fact and that it can be sanctioned with a fine of 3,000 euros.
However, during this summer period and to release the sludge generated by the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, by the municipal technicians, an exhaustive study of the municipal plots has been carried out in which sludge can be poured without in danger the public health of the citizens of Jumilla, taking into account that they are furthest away from any home.
As reported by the Councilor for the Environment, Juan Gil, has also been given instructions to Seprona, the Local Police, Environmental Agents and the Environmental Technical Service of the City Council, to be especially jealous in compliance with this ordinance .
The mayor has thanked the citizens beforehand that: "They strive in their spirit of civic participation," adding that "if a neighbor suffers from discharges of possible sludge spills let it know to this City Council for its effects and appropriate considerations."
