The Senate approved an initiative in support of patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (23/09/2009)

Socialist Senator, and Mayor of Jumilla, Francisco Abellán, has defended the Senate a motion in support of sufferers of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome that has been approved this morning.

Fibromyalgia is a disease of about 25,000 from Murcia, as calculated by the associations concerned.

In the Region of Murcia there are five associations of Fibromyalgia in Murcia, Cartagena, Yecla and Jumilla Cieza.

In Jumilla there a group that brings together people with this disease as well as family and has the support of the City of Jumilla.

In total consists of about 80 people, as confirmed by its president Maria Soriano.

The aim of this partnership is to guide and inform as many people in need, offer therapies and pursue social awareness in general of all that refers to the disease, so that the investigations move forward.

Francisco Abellán has been the sponsor of the proposal, and in his statement stated that "people with these diseases are entitled to access the public health system on an equal footing with other patients."

The approved text urges the Government to continue to ensure access to Public Health and Social System to all those people suffering from such pathologies and promote, in accordance with the Autonomous Communities, hotlines, counseling and support to workers with Fibromyalgia and encourage, through collective bargaining and the development of equality plans, the adaptation of jobs to their physical conditions.

Also, the compromise calls for the Executive, in collaboration with the Autonomous Communities, proceed to implement the procedures necessary to ascertain the incidence and prevalence of these syndromes and disseminate best practices that are made in the treatment of fibromyalgia by Autonomous Communities have a care protocol on fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Similarly, advocates propose a more scientific societies involved in the early diagnosis, treatment and monitoring (SER Rheumatology, Internal Medicine SEMI, SEMG General and Family Medicine, SEMER Rural and General Medicine, Family Medicine SEMFYC) an agreement for making among members of existing scientific knowledge about fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Finally, the document that all groups have endorsed the need to update fixes the contents of the document on fibromyalgia in order to incorporate advances on diagnosis and treatment of this disease, promoting consensus-based protocols for diagnosis, treatment and disability and coordinated specialists, and establish the appropriateness of presenting the Document on Fibromyalgia updated before the Committee on Health.

Francisco Abellán in his speech at the plenary session stressed that patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, along with family, friends, associations, professionals and health-conscious this problem, are going to the society, social partners and institutions to express requirements as they are people who suffer from diseases that cause pain and chronic fatigue and pain and persistent fatigue affects their lives in the personal, familial, social and professional.

Also, added Abellán, people suffering from these diseases often show their complaints because, despite the progress and achievements of recent years, in some regions are not protected by our Public Health and Social System.

Therefore, the Socialist spokesman was considered necessary to ensure universal access to Public Health and Social System of these patients on an equal footing with those who suffer any other disease.

Finally, the senator has found it necessary to ensure the fairness of the system in all regions with unique protocols for diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and ensure public research and the promotion of private research to improve treatments and prevent disease.
