IV Centenary of the Expulsion of the Moriscos of the Kingdom of Murcia

Moreover, from Tuesday, the Ethnographic Museum and Natural Science Jerónimo Molina, hosts the exhibition organized by the Department of Culture and the Municipal Library, dedicated to the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the expulsion of the Moors from Kingdom of Murcia, the last to be expelled from Spain in 1614.

Through explanatory panels, documents and objects from the period, the exhibition proposes an approach to the reasons, the process and the consequences of one of the most dramatic action of the Modern Middle Ages.

King Philip III ordered the expulsion of the Moors in fear of their possible support for a military invasion of Spain by the Ottoman Empire.

In the notarial deeds can continue the painful process by which the exiled Moors arranged, sometimes in the same port or already shipped, the fate of their families or their property.

However, what is most interesting is the documentation on the reverse process, ie, the mass return of those expelled during the following years and their integration back into their places of origin, recovering in many cases their properties and trying to rebuild his life, despite persecution by the authorities was still around 1627.

Documents of the State Council, the highest body of the Spanish monarchy in charge of international affairs and high politics, provide insight into the planning of the two expulsions of Murcia Moors who held the Crown, through the royal commissioners Don Luis Fajardo ( in 1610) and Conde de Salazar (1614), and attempts to prevent the return of the same.

Among the most interesting documents is the famous Memorial of Fray Juan de Pereda, conducted in 1612, after a visit to the places of the Moorish Kingdom of Murcia and tried to demonstrate their total assimilation and the unnecessary deportation.

The exhibition will be open until next November 19, 2014 the Ethnographic Museum and Natural Science Jerónimo Molina.
