The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, and the Deputy Mayor of Jumilla, Alicia Abellán, today inaugurated the Technical Seminar 'Agricultural Utilization of sludge from sewage treatment plants', organized by the Institution of cleansing and purifying (Esamur) and the city of Jumilla.
During the inauguration of the conference, held in Jumilla, the owner of Agriculture and Water said that the sludge generated in the purification processes "contain organic richness that improves agricultural soil texture," adding that their use "is beneficial if applied correctly."
He said "we can convert a waste into a resource and develop the concept of 'blue economy', that is to harness the waste we generate."
The purification of the region generate more than 140,000 tons of mud, which are high in organic nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which can "be used as a natural fertilizer on our soil."
Of these, half are applied directly after passing through rigorous analytical controls, while the rest is used to produce compost that can be applied to the soil as fertilizer.
Moreover, this practice is grouped under the conditionality of the Common Agricultural Policy and, therefore, Cerda said, "is a criterion to be considered in the evaluation of the annual payments to farmers".
He recalled that in addition to "the quality of the water obtained" gases from the combustion of sludge "and are taking advantage in the application of energy" and stressed that "now you try to go one step further in optimizing sludge in agriculture ".
Cerda said that the Region of Murcia "is a world reference in sanitation and treatment", with more than 100 cubic are reused every year, and the "use of the products generated in the process of purification".
