John Thomas, Sgt Fire: "As citizens we have in our power to prevent its development and spread of fire" (25/03/2011)

In a series of talks, organized from the Department of Women's Hall of Jumilla and in coordination with the Fire in the Region of Murcia and Jumilla firehouse, and conducted in the month of March, firefighters have taught techniques to the people 'Self protection against fire. "

The last of these talks took place on Thursday at the Roque Baños Socio Cultural Center with the assistance of several dozen people.

One of the main premises of the talks is, according to firefighters Sergeant John Thomas, "that as citizens we have in our power to prevent a fire can develop and spread."

To this end, the main contents of these have been guidelines on what to do and what not in case of fire.

These papers begin with an explanation of what the Consortium for Fire Fighting in the region of Murcia, and their operation and equipment.

Then, with practical examples, provide guidelines to follow in each case.

Offers general guidelines for recognizing what a fire, how it starts, how it develops and with that information specific situations we are quite practical, with scenes in the kitchen, what would happen when a pan begins to burn, if a TV starts smoke or start to smell smoke ... etc.

For John Thomas "such talks are necessary because the issue of prevention is very important because throughout our lives we find ourselves in a situation where we have to act before a fire. Orientate these talks to people adopt rules of proper behavior for responding to these situations. The fire can come in any situation, whether at work, at home, as in the woods, etc.

The head of the firefighters stated that "it is related both to do, like you never have to do is prevent from reaching the fire and if it comes to knowing what to do in those first moments, as citizens we have in our power to prevent its development and spread and what would be a fire confined to a limited space, to do well to get it wrong the consequences can be very different. "

"Most importantly, use common sense not to panic and to a fire always have to know that we can do something, very little that we believe is, we can close a door, drown the fire, avoid spreading to other rooms, etc.. "says Thomas, adding," for example, if a fire starts in a pan, the main thing is to not lose control, then simply with a damp cloth or the very top that is drowning fire and no oxygen to feed. If we fail and developed, there is smoke, not breathing and a dangerously hot, right there to close the door, remove electrical power from the building, leaving an orderly manner, call the 1-1-2 to report the situation and wait for emergency services arrive to take charge of the fire "

To fire the sergeant "People are responding well and acceptance is very good, prevention and education and we appreciate it. These talks have been offered since Thursday 10 March until Friday 25 March, with women's associations the hamlets of Farmhouse, The Encebras, Cañada del Trigo, Fuente del Pino and Torre del Rico.

Throughout the year, the performance of firefighters is not just in emergencies, but there is also the section on prevention and information, "where we played different groups of society, especially, is in schools. We take the implementation of School Self-Protection Plan that are required to make all schools to train teachers to educate children in this type of behavior and conduct some drills where the children were taught what to do and what not to do in a particular situation, "said Juan Tomás ended.
