The Department of Youth and Health marks AIDS Day with the distribution of informative material (01/12/2010)

The Youth Council today commemorated World AIDS Day with the distribution of informative material other than as bookmarks, postcards, brochures and guides, as well as condoms.

For it has been installed an information desk in front of Informajoven Centre in Plaza del Rey Don Pedro.

This campaign has been organized by the Youth Council, together with the Ministry of Health and the Youth Council of the Region of Murcia, with the aim of promoting measures to prevent the spread of this disease.

As indicated by José Luis Monreal, Councillor for Youth and Health "Today we remember a date, year after year, will have more relevance because AIDS remains the most important communicable disease in the XXI century."

Monreal added that "we must remember that prevention is the most effective way to combat this disease and its spread, especially by using condoms for casual sex that is where there is currently more cases."

The Study Group on AIDS (GESIDA) of the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, meeting in Madrid its second National Congress, said that "Spain is estimated that between 120,000 and 150,000 people are infected with HIV and approximately 25 and 30% do not know. "

This same group said that "despite awareness campaigns, scientific advances and increased information, AIDS remains a major threat. According to the latest report of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS ( UNAIDS), for every person who starts a treatment for the disease, two contract the virus. "

The disease is stabilized

The UN report shows that the AIDS epidemic is beginning to stabilize, with a significant decline in new infections and HIV-related deaths worldwide.

Data 'UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic 2010' show that in 2009, some 2.6 million people with HIV, a figure almost 20% less than 3'1 million in 1999.

An estimated 1.8 million people died in 2009 as a result of this disease, about 20% less than in 2004.
