Jumilla's new domestic waste transfer station reduces management costs and improves its environmental treatment (03/02/2018)

The regional government has just delivered to the City of Jumilla of the new domestic waste transfer station that involves savings in management costs and an improvement in the treatment of garbage deposited in containers for organic waste.

The general director of Environment, Juan Madrigal, indicated that "the system of collection and treatment of domestic waste of the municipalities served by the Consortium of Solid Urban Waste of the Region of Murcia goes a step further with this new station with significant environmental improvements and that facilitates the treatment work that takes place in the Ulea plant. "

In total, the work undertaken has involved an investment of 1,258,000 euros, co-financed with Cohesion Funds of the European Union, and its implementation and operation is part of the actions of the Waste Plan of the Region of Murcia 2016-2020 .

"This infrastructure, located on the site of the old waste treatment plant of Jumilla, will reduce the volume of waste collected in the municipality, by compaction, and transport them in specific vehicles to public treatment plants for proper management ", Madrigal pointed out.

The new station will receive domestic waste from the gray container, which in Jumilla exceeds 8,300 tons per year, and waste collected separately, such as light containers, from the yellow container, which last year in the municipality were 79.9 tons.

This waste transfer station will be key to reducing the costs of domestic waste management, since it will make it possible to compact waste and optimize its transport, with the consequent economic savings in the logistics of its management, as well as improvements derived from the reduction of transfers, that is, reducing the environmental footprint of this management.

The project

The execution of the project supposed works of adaptation of the land, to obtain the best conditions of face to the maneuvers that have to realize the trucks of collected of municipal waste.

The waste will be deposited in a hopper of 30 cubic meters, to be compacted in a press, reducing the volume of waste to be transported to the domestic waste treatment plant.

A zone has also been enabled to facilitate the loading and unloading of waste containers, once compacted.

In this way, the final urbanization is standardized in a similar way to the rest of the transfer stations in the Region, with the particularity that it includes coverings such as canopies, which will improve the reduction of leachate produced in this type of plants.

The covers of the transfer station, which total 380 square meters, were installed in areas susceptible to leachate production such as container parking, the area of unloading of materials and the container translation module.

"In this way, leachates produced by the content of organic waste inside the containers are totally confined and not exposed to the weather conditions of the area, so it is avoided that these are generated in times of rain," he said. the general director of Environment.

The new plant has the necessary facilities to be integrated into the 'Control of entrances and exits of public facilities (CESIP)' project.

To do this, they have been installed together with the weighing scale, barriers and video surveillance cameras, to perform access control.
