The Regulatory Council of the denomination of origin Jumilla reaches its 50th anniversary with 43 wineries registered and almost 2,000 winegrowers (11/04/2016)

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment, Adela Martinez-Cacho, said today that "the region is the only one with three denominations of origin of wines, and Jumilla, with 43 registered wineries, is the oldest and largest from Spain".

Martinez-Cacho presented the XXII Quality Contest Jumilla wines, which will take place on 14 and 15 April and with the participation of 30 professional sommeliers, responsible for conducting blind tastings of the wines presented by wineries in the Museum Wine.

On the 50th anniversary of the Control Board of the Designation of Origin (PDO) Jumilla, poster contest will be the image of the tickets of the National Lottery draw of April 14.

"Although the main consumer markets wine DO Jumilla are Germany, UK, Switzerland, Japan, China, Canada and Denmark, this event will give particular attention to China because it is a market with great expectations and where it have made significant promotional activities ", said the minister.

Jumilla PDO has some 21,620 hectares of vineyards, of which 40 percent are located in the municipality of Jumilla, with 1,959 wine growers.

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment said that "the region is linked to the brand of quality products and internationalization, so we have to keep working to reach the largest possible number of markets."

During the past year, the region exported wines for an amount of more than 146 million euros, a figure that ranks as the sixth largest exporting province of Spain.

As for promotion in third countries, a total of 17 wineries in the region have joined the Plan Promotion wines in third countries, facilitating international promotion thanks to European aid which it subsidizes up to 50 percent investment promotion and dissemination activities.

The goal is to increase your level of marketing outside the European Union, in countries like the United States, Canada, Japan, China, the Philippines and Taiwan.

The planned actions are directed also to other countries like Mexico, Brazil and African countries.
