Balance of DANA's passage through the Jumilla PDO: Blunt but very localized (18/09/2019)

The cold drop storm has strongly impacted concrete lands in the Jumilla PDO.

The rains of the night of Friday 11, made the greatest damage in places like Montesinos and the Cañada de Albatana, just on the border between Jumilla, Albatana and Ontur, where some plots of vineyards, olive trees, and almond trees were totally flooded by the strong water avenues that overflowed boulevards and roads.

In some places more than 150 liters of water have been collected in less than 24 hours.

In addition, in other areas the intense rains were accompanied by intense hail, with very localized effects in places such as La Celia, in the municipality of Jumilla and bordering areas between the Ontur and Tobarra.

On Monday 16, the Minister of Agriculture of Castilla-La Mancha, Mr. Francisco Martínez-Arroyo visited with the Provincial Delegate of Agriculture of Albacete, Mr. Ramón Sáez, the most affected areas of the Region of Campos de Hellín, in particular certain places of Ontur, Albatana and Fuenteálamo.

Yesterday, Tuesday 17, the Minister of Agriculture of Murcia, Mr. Antonio Luengo, went to Jumilla to check in situ the plots affected in this municipality.

Both days were accompanied by local authorities and farmers, as well as the President of the Regulatory Council of the PDO Jumilla, Mr. Silvano García and his Secretary General, Ms. Carolina Martínez Origone, who notes that “the damages have been very severe in certain plots and infrastructure such as roads, access and retaining walls, but fortunately, in general terms there will be no large production or quality losses because, although the storm has been harmful, it has affected very specific and localized areas while others plots are intact. â€

On the other hand, the cultivation in rainfed glass resists and is expected to recover, since most of the vines have been watered to blanket which predictably guarantees good hydration until the end of this campaign and even the next one, especially the Monastrell grape, the main variety of PDO Jumilla and whose harvest has just begun.

In the middle of vintage

This storm caught many farmers and wineries that make up the Jumilla PDO in the middle of the harvest.

Many of them were able to speed up and harvest white grape plots and some inks like Syrah before the first rains arrived.

A battle against the clock during the 24 hours prior to the arrival of DANA allowed many wineries not to see their grape production diminished.

With these rains, the harvest will be delayed in time until the grapes reach their optimum ripening point.

The forecasts predict that the Monastrell will have a very good quality, and that the good weather conditions of dry winds and sun contribute to the harvest continues in the best possible way.
