More than 1800 wine growers prepare the harvest of their grapes in the Jumilla PDO (28/08/2019)

One more year, the harvest in the Jumilla PDO begins with the white varieties of the southernmost zone.

Early varieties such as Chardonnay and Macabeo are the first to be harvested, and despite recent rains, the Jumilla PDO has already begun harvesting last week.

The vines have an excellent sanitary state and the maturation is delayed with respect to the previous campaign in red varieties, in general in the northernmost and highest altitude areas of the PDO can still be seen in the envero phase, especially the Monastrell .

Forecasts

This year it is somewhat drier than the previous one, with 280 mm rainfall, which places them within the normal average of 300 mm per year.

The rain was absent in winter, but the abundant rainfall of Holy Week has served as a reserve for the vineyard in recent months.

Consequently, the harvest will be less than in 2018, which was particularly abundant, and a 20-30% yield reduction is estimated compared to last year to be around 70 million kilos of grapes.

The recent rains, fortunately light rains without hail, are well received by the sector, as they help reduce the vineyard's water stress and favor the correct ripening of the grapes.

Grape yield control in the field

The Regulatory Council strengthens control through the incorporation of campaign inspectors in charge of controlling grape yields in the field.

The inspectors have started the visits to the farms, which have been chosen based on a risk analysis carried out by the regulatory body of the Regulatory Council in order to verify compliance with the specifications of permitted grape yields.

The maximum production allowed per hectare in the grape varieties covered by the Jumilla PDO is 5,000 kilos for red varieties and 5,625 kilos for whites, in the case of plantations under extensive cultivation (1,100-1,900 strains per hectare).

In intensive plantations (1,500-3,350 strains per hectare) the maximum allowed production is 8,750 kilos for both red and white varieties.

Production in those plots in which an excess yield is verified will be disqualified and that grape cannot be used to produce wine with Jumilla PDO.

These controls, are the decision of the last Plenary held in July, where the 2019 campaign rules were approved, the strengthening of the controls in the vineyard and also took stock of the first six months of Silvano García Abellán as president of the PDO Jumilla
